Legacy of Farmers (2021)

Artist Akiko Sogabe

I was very happy to receive this project offer. In 1999, I did a public art project called, “The History of Nikkei Farmers at Pike Place Market.” Since then, I’ve always hoped for a similar project honoring Nikkei farmers in Bellevue.

Nowadays, who can even imagine large farm fields growing in downtown Bellevue.

When I moved from Singapore to Bellevue in 1978 there were far less buildings and people, but at this time most of the fields were gone. And I didn’t know much about the history of Nikkei farmers. Over time, I did learn about this history and about the Nikkei life in general.

I was born in Japan, married a Japanese American, and became a naturalized citizen in 1997. Becoming a citizen sparked interest in Nikkei history. I sought out work with the community and got to work on projects dealing with the history of the Nikkei experience. I got to understand their struggles after WWII to the present day. I now strongly feel part of the Nikkei community. I feel grateful for their sacrifice and effort which allows me to thrive today.

The city of Bellevue is propelled by technology, but we shouldn’t forget the history of our past.

I left Japan in my mid 20s. Bellevue is my hometown. I am very proud to be a part of this project.
